Understanding the Region Through Early Evaluation
Energy Alberta is conducting field studies in the Peace River area of Northern Alberta as part of the site evaluation process for our proposed nuclear power project.
This work helps us ensure that potential sites meet key technical, environmental, social/cultural and safety requirements. This criteria comes from a number of sources including technical essentials in the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission regulations outlining site suitability evaluation requirements.
Our goals when selecting a site are to reduce environmental impact by choosing a location that minimizes disruption to the environment, ensure safe operations by selecting a site where environmental factors won't affect the facility’s ability to function safely and plan risk management by identifying any potential security, health or environmental risks and putting strong mitigation strategies in place.
A key part of this work involves collaboration. An Indigenous monitor from Duncan's First Nation works alongside our teams during the evaluation phase, helping identify and respect culturally sensitive areas while contributing valuable knowledge about the land. This partnership reflects our belief that sustainability is about protecting the environment and fostering meaningful, long-term relationships with Indigenous Nations and Communities built on a foundation of respect and shared stewardship.
