Nuclear energy may sound complex, but at its core, it’s one of the most powerful and efficient ways to generate electricity—here’s a breakdown of how it works and why it matters for our future.
Nuclear energy harnesses the immense power stored in the nucleus, or core, of atoms. This energy is primarily released through a process called nuclear fission, which occurs when atoms like uranium are split into smaller nuclei. When these atoms are divided, they release significant amounts of heat, and it's this heat that powers nuclear plants. In a nuclear power plant, the heat is used to create steam, which then drives turbines to generate electricity.
It’s an incredible process that taps into the fundamental forces of the atom to provide a powerful, efficient energy source.
It may surprise you to learn that a single uranium pellet weighs about 20 grams – less than the weight of a AA battery – and a reactor needs just 10 of these tiny pellets to power an entire house for an entire year. The impressive energy density of uranium makes it one of the most efficient sources of power available today.
To put this into perspective, generating the same amount of electricity as one uranium pellet would require 410 litres of oil. This stark contrast highlights the immense efficiency of nuclear energy and why it has become such a critical part of Canada’s clean energy future.
Another key advantage of nuclear energy is the relatively low volume of waste it produces. For example, a typical generator that supplies power to about one million homes will only produce about three cubic metres of waste annually.
