As the world shifts toward cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions, Alberta stands at the forefront of a historic opportunity. With our abundance of natural resources and commitment to innovation, the province has the potential to lead in the clean energy transformation.
Energy Alberta is dedicated to making this vision a reality by harnessing the power of nuclear energy to create a reliable, zero-emission energy future for the province.
Alberta has long been known for its energy sector, but as global priorities shift toward sustainability, the need for clean, renewable and secure energy has never been more urgent.
Nuclear energy is a safe and proven technology that offers a pathway to providing a stable, low-emission energy supply. By leveraging nuclear power, we can create a made-in-Alberta solution that not only meets the province's growing energy needs but also helps achieve our environmental and economic goals.
The Peace River Nuclear Power Project represents the next step in Alberta’s commitment to energy security and sustainability.
Energy Alberta is proposing the development of a nuclear power generating station in the Peace River area of Northern Alberta. The facility would house two to four 1,000MW-class CANDU® MONARK™ reactors and would produce up to 4,800MW of electricity—accounting for as much as 30% of Alberta’s current electricity generation.
The Project will not only provide clean, reliable electricity but also help Alberta diversify its energy portfolio, ensuring a long-term, sustainable power supply. Nuclear energy is one of the safest and cleanest energy sources available today and plays a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Canada’s nuclear industry is already one of the most advanced in the world, with a proven track record of safety, efficiency and economic impact. Nuclear energy offers numerous benefits that can transform Alberta’s energy landscape:
CANDU® reactors have a 65-year legacy of safe operation, with more than 900 years of combined experience across seven countries. This Canadian-designed technology is recognized globally for its reliability and safety.
Operating Excellence: CANDU® reactors have been in operation for over six decades, with 19 reactors currently operating in Canada (18 in Ontario and one in New Brunswick).
Energy Alberta is committed to working alongside Albertans to build a clean energy future. Together, we can make Alberta a global leader in clean energy innovation, creating a more sustainable, prosperous and resilient province for future generations.
